It took only a few days for Ryuko to have come this far in her observation.

At first, she never really saw a reason to examine the movement of door wings.  She didn’t hang around Bumblebee often, and she tried to stay away from Prowl as much as possible, so there went about half of the mechs on the Ark that had them.  She didn’t bother with Wheeljack’s wings because they were different from the other door wings and his vocal indicators revealed more anyway.

Then Dee Ess came along.  And his wings were huge.  Within a day of observing the scout, she knew that most of the time doorwings were a quick way to show emotion.  With Dee Ess’s wings, it was smaller movements, the weight of the second part keeping them from shifting too much.  But if the second part was removed for some reason, the wings would be even more animated than Bluestreak’s.

Most of the time, Dee Ess’s wings were at what Ryuko considered to be a “default happy” angle.  They only perked up even more when Ryuko, Becka, Livewire, Breakbeat, or Bluestreak would appear.  Blurr, Wheeljack, or Beachcomber didn’t get the same “perkiness” but Dee Ess was always happy to be with them too.

There were only a few times when Dee Ess’s wings weren’t at the default angle.  One of them would be when Breakbeat would mention something of their team and the reaction would be instantaneous.  Dee Ess’s wings would droop and Breakbeat’s optics would dim in sadness as the tall scout pulled him over, comforting the minibot the best he could.  Not only did it hurt Breakbeat that someone he trusted and looked up to forgot him but it would hurt Dee Ess because he knew he was the reason behind Breakbeat’s pain

The same angle was seen when Ryuko caught Dee Ess outside at night, staring up at the stars with a sad, wistful expression.  But the moment that Dee Ess noticed that she was close by, they would perk back up again and he would lean down and offer his hand.

Another time was when Jazz or Prowl was close by.  Dee Ess knew that he didn’t have to appear “professional” at every moment his superior officer or the tactician were near, but when they came into the room his wings would go to an “attention” angle.  After seeing Dee Ess do this, she noticed that Bluestreak, Bumblebee, and Smokescreen would do the same.

Ryuko had yet to see the angle of the wings when he became angry.  She was starting the think that he couldn’t get angry.  He would find some way to get back at the mechs that did something to his friends, but it was always with a grin on his face and his wings at the default angle.

“Little lady?”

The femme looked up to see concerned green optics staring at her and she smiled when she noticed that his wings were somewhere between default and sadness.  “Sorry Dee.  Lost in thought.  Something you want?”

Door wings back to default.  “Beat mentioned a ‘movie night’ in his room and said that Wire and Beach and Bekki are going to be there.  Can we go?”

“I don’t see why not.”  Ryuko climbed onto the white hand, at ease with the mech holding her.  “All of us are going to fit in Beat’s room?”

“Yea.  I would have offered mine, but Day’s been using it to hide.”

The femme snickered. “We eventually need to shove Day at someone, don’t we?”

A perking of doorwings was all the answer that she needed.
A little something that made me giggle when I wrote it.
